According to a study published in the journal Appetite our love of cooking shows is NOT helping with our waistlines. Home cooked meals and even treats made from scratch have long been associated with being the healthier option. However, these delightful cooking shows have shown us another level of indulgent cooking and rich recipes, they have inspired us to cook delicious dishes that we otherwise wouldn’t. The research suggests those of us who watch cooking shows and cooked what we watched were more likely to have a higher BMI (body mass index) than those watching the show and not cooking. So we can watch and salivate what is being made, we are just better offer not trying it at home.

Your gut isn’t working

Can our gut be the key to maintaining a healthy weight? In the past few years, research has begun to unlock some of the mystery of our gut. The species of gut bacteria and the intricate role they play in our overall health is now a huge topic of interest. A healthy balance of the bacteria in our gut governs the functioning of many, many systems including the immune system and metabolism. So if our gut is not functioning the way it should we are in trouble! For optimal gut health think fermented foods. Sauerkraut, Kombucha, pickles, yogurt, kimchi (spicy Asian sauerkraut), Kefir (drinkable yogurt). All these wonderful foods can help assist with good gut health.

You’re not getting enough sleep

Studies show that a lack of sleep can slow your metabolism which in turn causes your body to use up less energy for essential tasks such as walking, eating and breathing. Lack of sleep can also boost hunger, so we’re burning fewer calories but craving more. Getting a little less sleep here and there is not going to cause an issue, it is however if you are feeling sleep deprived. For optimal health, experts say you should try to get 7.5 hours of sleep a night on a regular basis.
