There are some foods you need to have on your shopping trolley this busy silly season. Foods that help you to feel good, train harder, burn fat and are essential to maintaining optimum health. Foods that can sustain us through the long days and they are easy to add to your weekly menu.

STEEL CUT OATS

These are little gems are brilliant. They full of calcium, B vitamin, vitamin E, calcium, iron, protein and potassium. Unlike rolled oats (oatmeal/porridge) steel cut oats are larger and take longer to digest, so they keep you fuller for longer. Rolled oats have been processed and manipulated into the form we are familiar with to speed up the cooking process. These oats are steamed, rolled, steamed again and toasted. Whereas steel cut oats are simply roughly chopped. The best way to way to eat steel cut oats is to buy organic oats and soak them overnight in filtered water before cooking. This will speed up the cooking process and aid in digestion. They can also be cooked in the slow cooker overnight. They are a great start to your day this time of year.

TURMERIC

Turmeric has to be the most popular spice of 2017. This spice is being hailed as the best anti-inflammatory on the planet and is a very strong antioxidant. You can take a supplement or add this amazing spice to your cooking. It is wonderful in soups, roasted vegetables, smoothies, on popcorn, with rice and it is even brilliant in tea. The health benefits come from its yellow pigment called curcumin. Recent studies are linking the positive health benefits of curcumin with aiding cancer, cardiovascular disease, arthritis, uveitis, ulcerative proctitis, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel disease, tropical pancreatitis, peptic ulcer, gastric ulcer and diabetes. Further research is underway, but it’s easy to see why this 4000+-year-old spice has become so popular.

CITRUS

Citrus fruits are abundant this time of year. We use citrus in our holiday cooking. We add them to liven up our water bottles and to make fresh cocktails. We are all familiar with the health benefits of getting out Vitamin C from citrus fruits, however, there are many more health benefits. When eaten whole citrus fruit is an amazing source of fibre. Citrus fruits also contain flavonoids that assist with heart health, they are packed with potassium, they help regulate your blood sugar level and they are excellent at keeping you hydrated over the summer months.

RED CABBAGE

Red cabbage is one of the best nutritious and delicious vegetables that you can serve this holiday season. It can be used in countless dishes hot or cold and it is used in sauerkraut one of the healthiest dishes on the planet. Red cabbage is packed with high levels of antioxidants and it is nutrient dense. With its wealth of vitamins and minerals, it’s value to our health should not be overlooked. Research has linked the consumption of red cabbage to aiding with countless health issues and diseases. Red cabbage is a wonderful addition to salads this time of year.

These power foods and many more wonderful fresh fruit and vegetables are brilliant additions to any menu. They will give you a wonderful boost, leaving you feeling fresh and energised to tackle the busy weeks.
