MODERN SCATTERBRAIN

Keeping your mind focused on the task at hand can sometimes feel impossible. It can be immensely frustrating. The struggle can easily be blamed on getting older and simply having too much on your plate, but what if something else was causing you to jump from thought to thought, from to-do-list to shopping list. Leaving you foggy and distracted, making it impossible to remember the important things like when you last shaved your legs……far out it can’t have been that long, can it?

Hello, modern scatterbrain!

You see, our current world provides us with an abundance of attractive distractions, Instagram, Youtube, Snapchat, Facebook, email on demand, the list really is endless. These distractions are causing us to have scatterbrains, we are struggling to focus on the task at hand. I’m ALL too familiar with this condition. I sat down with my coffee to write this blog post 10 minutes ago and I managed to write the opening sentences, then got up to feed my puppies, checked Instagram (girls gotta know how many likes she’s got), replied to a text and had a quick squiz at Facebook just to make sure, sure of what I simply don’t know!

So it’s an issue. This irrelevant information is taking up valuable resources in our mind and we are slipping out of balance. Just as you would gain weight from a bad diet and no exercise, not getting restful sleep, being stressed and over stimulated by everything around us will lead to an imbalance in our brain chemistry.

What can we do?

Thankfully there are some easy natural solutions that can help.

Find the balance. We need adequate levels of serotonin the wonderful hormone responsible for us feeling calm, optimistic and confident. If it’s too low it can cause all sorts of issues from depression, anxiety, and sleep issues. To top up your serotonin levels book yourself in for a massage, human touch can dramatically increase your serotonin levels. Early morning sun also does wonders, early morning sun is more intense and this can boost your body’s production of melatonin in the evening. Serotonin converts to melatonin for a great night’s sleep, so this is a great option. You can also look at the type of fat and the amount of fat you have in your diet. Fat is essential for hormone production, without adequate fat in your diet it is impossible to produce enough serotonin. Next, you need to have a look at having the right amount of dopamine, this incredible chemical is responsible for keeping our mind clear, focused, motivated and energised, very cool indeed. Again, there are some easy natural ways to increase your dopamine levels, like meditation. Meditation is something I have just started to really appreciate, I started meditating a few times a week last year and have found it to be incredible. Meditation has been shown to increase dopamine improving focus and concentration, so this year my goal is it make it part of my daily routine. If meditation is not your thing there are many other options including, exercise, drinking green tea, eating fermented foods, listening to music and eating some of my other favourite foods almonds, apples, avocados, bananas and thankfully drinking coffee.

Then we need to ensure that we ensure that the stress hormone cortisol is kept at a low level. If cortisol is high it can make you feel wired, create sleep problems and leave you feeling fatigued. The good news here is that meditation, listening to music, massage and quality sleep (sound familiar?) all help in keeping cortisol low.

We all get distracted from time to time and that’s ok. When distraction turns to forgetting, not being able to concentrate and feeling foggy when you’re usually on point it’s time to re-evaluate what’s going on.

Take the time today to pause and reflect on how you can make some simple changes to shake that scatterbrain, it’s completely worth it, there’s nothing worse than running out the house in the morning in that skirt you love and looking down at your unshaven legs and thinking.……far out it can’t have been that long, can it?
