IMPORTANCE OF RESISTANCE TRAINING

To remain happy, healthy and energetic physical exercise is essential. Often resistance training is overlooked, considered dangerous or it’s classified as something men do in the gym. But the reality is resistance training can be an unbelievable benefit to your overall health and wellbeing.

Resistance training builds strength, boosts energy levels and helps to reduce stress. It also helps to improve our bone density which has been proven to decrease the chances of developing osteoporosis. We tend not to think about osteoporosis until later in life but it’s something that we need to think about before it becomes a problem. Studies have shown that strength training as part of a regular exercise routine can increase bone density and prevent osteoporosis later in life.

Other benefits include:
  • Increased balance, stability and flexibility
  • Reduced blood pressure
  • Increased metabolism
  • Reduced body fat
  • Improved posture
  • Increased stamina

The Australian physical activity and sedentary behaviour guidelines recommend that adults do muscle-strengthening activities on at least two days each week. Regular strength training can be done in the gym or added to your current exercise routine. It can also be done at home using resistance bands and balls, small hand weights, water and even your own body weight.

Often the perception is lifting weights equates to bulking up, looking heavy and not looking lean. Women are hesitant to reach for the weights because they don’t think they are going to get the desired look when they think about exercise options. In fact, studies have shown only about a fifth of females strength train two or more times a week. It seems the message isn’t getting through. Women naturally have significantly lower levels of testosterone than men.  Men have more testosterone so they are much more equipped at gaining muscle with strength training. Because women do not have very much testosterone in their bodies, they will never be able to get as big as men no matter how many weights they lift.

When women weight train on a regular basis they will develop muscle but it won’t gain a large amount of mass, the toned look that comes from weight training happens when the fat that is covering the muscle is removed.

Resistance training can be an unbelievable benefit to your overall health and wellbeing and we need to add it to our exercise routine. Making it part of your life now will have a positive impact, but it will be many years down the track that you will be thankful you started because the benefits you will experience will absolutely be worth it!
