Have you ever wondered if your home contributes to your health? Because the health of your home has an enormous impact on your health and the health of your loved ones.

We are all aware that getting adequate sleep, eating a balanced diet, reducing stress, getting regular exercise are all part of staying healthy. But there is a very important element that seems to be overlooked in the equation, the health of our home.

There are many areas that need to be cleaned up and in turn, we will benefit immensely. Today I am going to cover a few tips for four key areas.

THE LAUNDRY

Did you know that around 75% of homes contain too much moisture? The large chunk of that moisture is coming from our laundries. It seems that being energy conscious and not using the dryer instead of hanging the wet washing in the laundry to air dry is contributing as much as 2 litres of moisture into our homes, making up a third of the overall moisture problem.

The issue here is it creates an ideal breeding ground for nasty mould, fungi, and harmful bacteria.

If you can, hang as much washing outside to dry if that’s not an option make sure your laundry and home are well ventilated even in the cold winter months.

THE KITCHEN

Did you know your gas stove can be one of the most toxic appliances in your home? Gas stoves emit nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, and formaldehyde. Scary stuff, I was blissfully unaware until recently. It can have a very negative impact on our health. If you have a gas stove always use the extractor fan when cooking and as an extra measure, you can ventilate the room as well.

THE BEDROOM

If you’re like me and making the bed in the morning is an essential item on your list, brace yourself for some bad news.

A neatly made bed with the windows shut tightly ready for you to leave for the day turns your bed into the ultimate breeding ground for dust mites. These little critters can dramatically increase your chances of catching a cold, exacerbate allergies, can greatly affect asthmatics and cause hay fever.

The additional dampness of closing your room up especially in winter months not only increases dust mites but will encourage bacteria to fester, the nasty bacteria that can lead to the flu!

So don’t make your bed on the days you really don’t need to. Pull the covers off and air it out. If you can’t do that (I struggle) then leave it for as long as you can each morning, giving it a chance to air out. Also open the windows as often as you can to circulate some fresh air.

CLEANING PRODUCTS

Common cleaning products purchased at supermarkets can cause a whole host of health issues. I personally don’t use anything unless it is 100% naturally derived free from any harmful ingredients. The misconception is natural cleaning products and homemade products are inferior, but I have never found that to be the case. A recent European study concluded that regular cleaning products may have minor effects on a person’s health. But they can cause influenza and tonsillitis in children. I don’t think that the benefit of these products out ways the health of my family, natural products are amazing and clean just as well.

Home is where the heart is, it’s also where you can improve your health. If you can eliminate some of the chemicals you bring into your home, dry wet washing outside and let some natural air flow through your home you are well on your way to improving your health and the health of your family.
