Adding seafood regularly to our diet is a great idea. It’s one of the healthiest choices we can make. Fish contain nutrients such as protein, vitamin D and of course omega-3 fatty acids, all essential for a healthy brain and functioning body.
Looking at recent trends, most of us regularly purchase salmon as our fish of choice. However, this might not always be a good choice. Studies have shown that when we buy farmed salmon over wild salmon (farmed is cheaper) we are at risk of eating salmon that has significantly higher organochlorine pesticides. This type of pesticides may cause cancer and can cause damage to the central nervous system. It can also damage thyroid and bladders in humans that have had long-term exposure.
Whilst practices are improving and new research is happening it’s best to be informed about what you are eating. Purchasing wild salmon is the better option.
