I have a terrible fear of using air freshener, perfumed plugins, scented candles or any kind of scented sprays that claim to leave your house feeling fresh and smelling beautiful. A HUGE fear. I know they can be toxic and be harmful to our health. But just like everyone else I need something to cover up those smells that linger around the house. I want the nice scents but NOT the toxins.
How do we know that these products are potentially toxic?
A wonderful organisation the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) who are an organisation of over two million members and experts including 500 scientist, lawyers and policy advocates around the globe published a detailed study Hidden Hazards of Air Fresheners.
This study found the fresh scent of air fresheners may mask a health threat—chemicals called phthalates that can cause hormonal abnormalities, birth defects, and reproductive problems. NRDC’s independent testing discovered phthalates in 86 per cent (12 of 14) of air freshener products tested, including those marketed as “all-natural” or “unscented”—and none of the products we tested listed phthalates on their labels. The study also advised consumers may wish to avoid using air fresheners—especially in places where there are children or pregnant women. This study was published in 2007 and it looks as if companies are working towards making their air fresheners less toxic. However, research continues and I think there are many wonderful alternatives we can use without taking a risk.
First, you can buy wonderful air fresheners that are toxin free and smell wonderful, I personally use Our Eco Clean Air Freshener, it’s Australian made, it’s affordable and it smells amazing. You can check out their website here.

Lately, I have been experimenting with essential oils. Not only have I found them to be an amazing way to give your home a gorgeous smell, they can be used in many other ways.
Here are 5 ways you can use essential oils to freshen your home
Pop a few drops of your favourite essential oil onto a few cotton balls and add them to your vacuum cleaner bag. As you vacuum the house it will infuse the air from room to room.
- For a fresh feel try a combination of orange oil and peppermint oil.
Spray your sheets! Fill a spray bottle, I use glass bottles for this. Fill the bottle with water and a few drops of oil. Spray your sheets when you remake your bed after washing the sheets or when you pull the covers back just before you climb in after a long day.
- For a calming sleep try a combination of chamomile and lavender.
Make your own reed diffuser. I have just made 4 of my own read diffusers for very little money. I made them with one of my little humans and it was mess free and a whole lot of fun. I was inspired by the following post over at Lauren Conrad, you can see that post here. However, we didn’t use spray paint and we made sure all the ingredients were organic.
- I have used lemon myrtle in all of the diffuses and the house smells magnificent.
This one I love! All you need is a few Q-tips and some essential oil of your choice. Dip each end of a Q-tip into the oil and hide it in the toilet paper roll in the bathroom. Your toilet will constantly smell fresh. You can add as many Q-tips as you like to get the scent you desire.
- Try sweet orange for something different. Sweet orange has a calming effect, especially in children.
Make your own diffuser. Using a mason jar add ½ cup of baking soda and 6-10 drops of essential oil. Poke holes in the mason jar lid, place the lid on the jar and place where you desire. This will need refreshing once a month.
- Try lavender oil and dried lavender. This makes the jar appealing to look at as well as smelling great. Lavender is wonderful for assisting with anxiety.
